@cargol and I have started another simple 1 vs 1 campaign --Β  this time it's back to FOG Ancients and Romans vs everybody else. 🙂Β

We start in 280 BC -- we each get one attack as Roman Blue and Red player to attack into any adjacent territories and try to conquer them, using armies from the period on the turn track.

Aim is to gain as much territory as possible an therefore glory as Rome's greatest conqueror over the centuries from Republic to Empire.

We also each play Barbarians/Greeks/Carthaginians as defenders against the others attack, trying to prevent the other from obtaining more glory than one self.

This way we each get to also play a variety of Barbarian and Hellenistic and Carthaginian armies.Β

Rome Expand 01

RULES

Β Very basic...

ATTACKS

Each player gets ONE attack as Romans per turn. (unless he is tied up in a CONTESTED region: see below)

Attacks can be launched into any region adjacent or linked to a region under Roman control.

A player can attack from a territory his opponent has previously captured (if it isn't using it as a base for an attack in the turn) and vice versa.

Player order determined by win/loss% as Romans in previous turn. (random draw at start)

BATTLES

Battles are all Medium on either Mediterranean/N European/Middle East Agricultural ... or an Pot Luck maps.

Armies are period-appropriate Roman and opponent armies (with appropriate available Allies) -- we'll kind of make this up as go along.

BATTLE RESULTS

Major Victory wins territory outright.

Major Defeat means a repulse.

Minor Victory/Defeat makes the territory CONTESTED and battle there continues until either side gets a Major Victory or wins best 2 out of 3 Minor Victories.

At the end of X turns, whoever had captured more regions for the glory of Rome wins.

TURN I

Starting draw: -- I play BLUE, @cargol plays RED -- and BLUE goes first.

BLUE attacksΒ GALLIA-CISALPINA:

Roman (280-220 BC)Β  vsΒ  Gallic (300-101 BC)Β

on Mediterranean Agricultural map.

RED attacks GREECE & MACEDONIA:

Roman (280-220 BC) Allies: Apulian (473-203 BC)Β  vsΒ Β Macedonian (320-261) Allies: Greek (280-228 BC)

Battle is joined ... interesting match ups -- in GALLIA-CISALPINA I am facing off as Romans against a horde of Gauls with a ton of chariots and noble cavalry, we will see how my Republican legions hold up.

In GREECE & MACEDONIA I'm commanding the Greek/Macedonian phalanxes and inferior medium infantry with a bit of superior cavalry against Consul @cargol 's Romans (with some Apulian allies thrown in) -- this is also going to get interesting. I went aggressive as the Greeks to try and get the initiative early on.

I am likely to win the cavalry fight, but the rest is going to be a brutal brawl trying to grind down those legions or fend them off, depending how things go.Β

Furious battle still continues in GALLIA CISALPINA... my Roman legions may prevail, but it's going to be a close, bloody affair.... a slog of heavy Roman infantry against hordes of Gallic chariots and cavalry, and finally coming to grips with the main force of Gallic foot.

Roman misfortune however in MACEDONIA & GREECE as the Macedonian and allied Greek armies have managed to inflict a Major Defeat on the Romans ... General Cargolus draws back to lick his wounds and study this battletoΒ  figure out a way to overcome the Macedonian phalanxes -- who definitely are no longer the armies of Alexander of old, with somewhat brittle morale at times. Will they stand up to a second encounter?

The battle in GALLIA-CISALPINA ends in a Minor Defeat for the Romans ... the well-earned hard-fought victory for the Gauls commanded by the redoubtable Gallic chieftain Cargolix.Β

A difficult start for expanding the early Roman state.

TURN 2 starts with the General Riconius's legions tied up in an ongoing campaign in the "contested" province of GALLIA-CISALPINA. So battle continues there this turn.

(Minor Victory/Defeat makes the territory CONTESTED and battle there continues until either side gets a Major Victory or wins best 2 out of 3 Minor Victories.)

General Cargolus has the option of attacking GREECE & MACEDONIA again or switching to attacking the Carthaginians in SICILIA.

@cargolΒ  -- let me know which direction you'll attack this turn.Β
