Seeking reader recommendations for books on the Soviet-Afghan War. I've read The Bear Went Over The Mountain, currently reading The Great Gamble, and have Afghantsy in the queue.
For anyone interested in this topic, Just picked it up on Amazon for $1.99. Looking forward to it.
If you’re looking to zoom out and understand why the Soviet-Afghan War really mattered, I highly recommend Ghost Wars by Steve Coll. It’s not a battlefield narrative like Bear or Afghantsy, but it shows how the invasion reshaped global politics and directly set the stage for everything that followed—right up to 9/11. It’s incredibly well-researched, reads like a thriller at times, and it won the Pulitzer for a reason. Perfect for context around everything you’re already reading.
