Crew of the Russian minelayer Prut, which was sunk by the SMS Goeben near Sevastopol in 1914.
On 29 Oct 1914, while returning from a troop transport mission near Cape Chersonese, she encountered the German battlecruiser SMS Goeben sustaining heavy damage from enemy gunfire. To avert capture of her mines—risking catastrophic detonation—and secret equipment, Captain Georgy Bykov ordered Prut scuttled.
This is a fantastic glimpse of a Cossack cavalry patrol riding into the storm of the Great War, still carrying that old-world confidence and mobility that had defined Russian warfare for generations. 🐎⚔️ You can almost feel the moment between eras here — proud horsemen operating across the vast Eastern Front just before machine guns, trenches, and artillery began forcing even legendary cavalry to adapt or fade from the battlefield. Really captures that dramatic transition from romantic 19th-century warfare to the brutal modern reality of WWI. 📜🔥
