In occupied Paris, café life continued beneath the trees as civilians tried to hold on to normal routines. Yet the German uniforms strolling past the tables were a constant reminder that the city was no longer free.

Until at least Aug 1944. It must be awful to see your city occupied by the enemy and have to just watch. 😕

Masses of German soldiers queueing up to the German Theatre at Lille (today Opéra de Lille). Uncompleted by the French at the outbreak of the war, the theatre was finished by German troops during the occupation of the city.

French resistance fighters provide an honor guard while escorting two U.S. soldiers (the Cap Burton W. Benze and the Pvt. Charles Goldstone, assigned to Medical Detachment) who were killed in the village of Coulommiers. During the fighting for the town, a German tank opened fire towards an exposed American officer who was seriously wounded. When the private medic attempted to run towards the officer, he was shot and killed by the tank's machine gun. Local town officials have arrived to pay their respects and honor these fallen allies. Aug 1944.
