Japanese Mitsubishi A6M "Zero" but they are on board the USS Copahee. In the summer of 1944, following the US landings on Saipan, American forces captured Aslito Airfield, a major Japanese base. The rapid collapse of Japanese resistance left behind a significant number of aircraft, including several "Zero" fighters in comparatively good condition for shipment to the USA.

The Ibuki, the lead ship of its class in the Imperial Japanese Navy, never saw combat. Its construction began in 1943, but a lack of materials slowed its progress to the point that by the end of the war only 85% of its target had been achieved.

Ensign Shinichi Ishimaru was a talented pitcher for the Nagoya Army (now the Chunichi Dragons) in the Japanese Professional Baseball League. Drafted into the military in late 1943, he became a naval aviator and died at age 22 during a kamikaze mission aboard his A6M Zero off Okinawa on May 11, 1945.
