Ruth Mitchell

Ruth Mitchell was an American journalist who became caught up in the Axis invasion of Yugoslavia in 1941. Sent to the Balkans to cover the marriage of King Zog, she stayed on in Belgrade and witnessed the German bombing firsthand. She went from reporting on the Chetniks to joining them, serving as a courier and spy under leaders including Draža Mihailović. Arrested by the Gestapo and sentenced to death, she was imprisoned before ultimately being released in a prisoner exchange, later writing one of the most vivid firsthand accounts of the Yugoslav resistance.

Yugoslav soldiers march into captivity 1941.

Yugoslavia collapsed in less than 10 days without much of a fighting.

Yugoslavian collapse had far greater implications in the Balkan theater of operations as it uncovered Hellenic's army flank in Western Macedonia. That was an

opportunity that German forces seized and exploit outflanking Greek and Anzac forces defending Western Macedonia and eventually leading to a Greek

capitulation and evacuation of British/Anzac forces  from the mainland.
