Some observations from my end in general...
Not being able to re-enforce Z town was a major issue from the start and could have been defended better off the start but facing a constant stream of Red Army's flow would have been a fish bowl situation imho.
My force composition and purchase was off from the start...

I will definitely change up the eastern map edge a bit to allow a more viable strategy for the Germans to fight on the east bank. I think they can, but the changes I have in mind will make it more appealing to do so, including more cover for a southern approach and probably a better Small VP objective on that side (vs. the fort).
For your game, I don't think the issue was your purchase as much as the use of what you bought. think you traded a chance at 250pts' worth of objectives for a guaranteed 150pts' worth of objectives, although I'm sure that was not entirely obvious at the time. As always, the effectiveness of a plan is relative to what your opponents does that counters it. I think you needed more artillery and more scouting units to do what you were trying to do. The panzers moving slowly in the open without the ability to obscure from AT guns or having reconned to know where they are was problematic. Keep in mind this is me armchair generaling and in the words of @shady-side "There's Patton and Zhukov and far below there's me." (or something like that 😆 ).
The 3-game operation concept definitely requires different thinking, and a mindset of what to try and pull off each round. Recon & fix/isolate, followed by destroying the isolated forces in games 1-2 and repeating in 2-3 would seem to be key.
