The Vae Victis (‘Woe to the Conquered’) campaign covers the wars between the Romans and the Etruscans in central Italy in the late fourth century BC, unfolding over a series of seven Years.

Players represent these two major factions, playing co-operatively in teams within each major faction. The idea with more than one player in each team is that we can relieve each other when real life calls and still ensure that the campaign progresses. Furthermore, players can, if desired, focus on what they enjoy the most: the strategic considerations on the map or on the actual in-game battles. (This could vary over time as agreed within teams, depending on real life commitments.)

Five non-major factions (GaulsSamnitesGreeksUmbrians, and Sabines) are also potentially available, as part of successful diplomacy, in the form of allies to the armies of the major factions in battles or even as outright armies of their own, then controlled by the major factions.

The main objective is to control the enemy faction's capital, the campaign ending immediately in victory for a major faction if the opposing major faction loses control of its capital.

Battles will be fought in Field of Glory II: Ancients, using a separate module (to allow for all allies) with applicable army lists from Paul59's marvellous TT Mod (permission granted by Paul already, many thanks!). (The module is already created and can, once the campaign launches, be downloaded in-game: very quick and easy.)

  • Etruscans (Etruscan 330-280 BC)
  • Romans (Roman 340-281 BC)
  • Gauls (Gallic Lowland Tribes 390-301 BC)
  • Samnites (Samnite 355-272 BC)
  • Greeks (Greek (Western) 380-281 BC)
  • Umbrians (Umbrian 490-260 BC)
  • Sabines (Italian Hill Tribes 490-275 BC)

If you think this looks interesting, please read the rules. If you're still interested after that and can commit to a slow-pace campaign that will 'drag on' for months or longer, please write here, in this thread.

Just need to ensure that a snowball effect isn’t created. That is, that the capture of a Large City gives Momentum which in turn increases the chance through City Diplomacy Operation to capture more Large Cities, and so on.

It looks like a very interesting campaign. Count me in in any Major or Non-Major faction (except Gauls please XD) !

Cheers!

Only Major Factions are playable 🙂 But glad that you can be either Roman or Etruscan, much like Ahmet/ilpars and myself. Flexibility. Now all we need is a fourth player (and more than that are welcome of course) and we’re good to go this time as well. Takers?

This looks like a really interesting campaign idea ⚔️🏛️ I love the concept of the Romans vs Etruscans setup and the longer slow-burn style of play across multiple years. Sounds like a great mix of strategy on the map 🗺️ and big tabletop-style battles ⚔️🛡️🐎

I actually just managed to get Crossover running on my iMac 💻🍏 so I can now run PC games on it as well. Right now I’m in the process of getting all my Combat Mission titles installed ⚙️🪖💥 so I’ll have them available on both the Mac and PC side of the same machine.

Once I get everything sorted out I’d definitely like to download Field of Glory II and give it a try ⚔️🏛️📜 This campaign format looks like a lot of fun.

In the meantime, good luck to everyone forming teams and kicking things off 🍀⚔️ Looking forward to following along and seeing how the campaign unfolds! 🏛️🛡️📯

You're welcome to join in any role once you feel ready, @panzer-lehr. In fact, if you like the rules and enjoy the strategic part (which you seem to do 🙂 ), you can start out by being involved "only" in that part and leave the battle fighting in FoG II to your comrades, until you're ready for it?

That's the beauty with these types of strategic games, almost being games in their own right, much like board games, in combination with team play, that most players can find their desired role within the campaign and within the team. Some participate in all aspects, some only in the strategic part, and some only in the battles. And that may vary over time, as agreed within the teams. 🙂 Which allows real life commitments and other interests, and also the campaign to move in a slow yet steady pace.

Thanks for the clarification@kronenblatt — that actually helps a lot. I like the idea that the strategic layer is almost a game in itself and that players can focus on different roles within the team. 🗺️⚔️

I’m still getting my setup sorted out at the moment, but I’ll definitely keep an eye on how the campaign develops. The strategic side especially sounds like something I’d enjoy. Either way it looks like a great project — looking forward to seeing it get underway! 🏛️🛡️

The expressed interest at FGM has come from two fellow members who are also active on the Slitherine forum, and with two additional players signing up there, we will give this campaign a go at SLITHERINE. So please come over in case you want to participate. 🙂
