I wasn't completely unaware of this battle, but it's importance to Western culture suggests it is something worth

reviewing. About 80,000 combatants per side is attention getting. 🤓

What stands out here is how much this comes down to timing and risk.

From a wargame perspective, Vienna is basically on the brink — the defender’s position is deteriorating, and the attacker just needs a bit more time to finish it. The relief force isn’t a sure thing; it’s a high-risk move that has to land at exactly the right moment.

What tips it is decisive commitment. Once the relief army engages, it shifts from a siege scenario to a meeting engagement, and the Ottomans lose the initiative almost immediately.

Feels like one of those situations where a single turn — arrive now vs. one turn later — completely changes the outcome.

Battle of the Golden Spurs or Battle of Courtrai

Amazing what I find while browsing YouTube that was historically important of which I had

little to no knowledge. That may be the worst constructed sentence I've ever tried to put

together. Still, it's a gud watch.

Oh, I had to look this weapon up. Good that I did. - "The goedendag is a 14th-century Flemish

infantry weapon, combining a spear and club, known for its devastating, low-cost effectiveness

against armored cavalry, most notably at the 1302 Battle of the Golden Spurs. It features a stout

3–5 ft wooden shaft, reinforced by a metal cap, with a thick vertical iron spike for thrusting and

crushing armor." - Google AI

@panzer-lehr

It is fascinating battle/siege … as so may are in this period.

Vienna was probably for Ottomans logistically a culminating point in their ability to project land power into Europe.

They were perpetually involved in a on-and-off three front conflict… Balkans, Mediterranean and Persia (which often took higher priority than the the fights vs west … kind of overlooked by western historians at times)

Personally fascinated by the 15th, 16th and 17th Century Mediterranean history.

One of the most horrible features of war is that all the war-propaganda, all the screaming and lies and hatred, comes invariably from people who are not fighting.

Battle of Montgisard (1177), a remarkable and often overlooked episode from the Crusader period.

image (2)

In late November 1177, Baldwin IV of Jerusalem—young, already afflicted with leprosy, and commanding a relatively small force—found himself facing the army of Saladin near Ramla. Saladin had advanced deep into the Kingdom of Jerusalem, expecting little resistance, his forces dispersed and foraging across the countryside after what had been, up to that point, an unopposed campaign.

Rather than withdraw or attempt to delay, Baldwin chose to act decisively. Gathering what knights and infantry he could, along with a contingent of the Knights Templar, he advanced rapidly and struck Saladin’s army before it could properly concentrate. Contemporary accounts describe the suddenness of the assault and the symbolic presence of the relic of the True Cross carried into battle, lending both urgency and resolve to the Crusader attack.

The result was a sharp and unexpected reversal. Saladin’s forces, caught off guard and not fully formed for battle, were driven into disorder. What followed was not merely a defeat but a rout—Saladin himself narrowly escaped, and the campaign collapsed entirely. For a brief moment, the Kingdom of Jerusalem had achieved one of its most striking victories against a formidable opponent.

Montgisard stands as a reminder that medieval warfare was not always decided by numbers alone. Leadership, timing, and the ability to seize a fleeting opportunity could overturn even the most unfavorable circumstances. It is also a poignant episode, given Baldwin IV’s condition—leading from the front despite his illness, he secured a victory that would resonate far beyond its immediate tactical outcome.
