Swatting the Sky - Then & Now ...

Then: Back in WWII, if something was in the air and you didn’t want it there, you rolled out the usual suspects—
Flak 88s, U.S. 90mm guns, Bofors 40mm—and went to work.

https://images.openai.com/static-rsc-4/5E90XfzMnl061MirI0FNx6yJcN0BqfUl9fwGTYn0i_bWX99WM9wRcsQDyfkxBadzLbJv-cDhnMVojeKSYSw4_VbLhMwheFFc-3PlLk82t5TAir6yWS8ZQJcqp_Xlfw1abkCzFD-lv8LYEP_-2E4_VqpYG91ZXzP0fbl6bese9PHb658o4l7W_hZfOg1td-3S?purpose=fullsize
Searchlights would grab the target, early radar would help with the math, and then you just filled that patch of sky with exploding steel.
You weren’t sniping—you were making the air itself deadly and letting probability do the rest. Crude? Sure.
But when it came together, nothing wanted to fly through it twice.

Now: Same mission, just a lot less guesswork.

Instead of flak, you’ve got systems like Iron Beam and DragonFire putting a laser on a drone and cooking it in place.
And if that’s not the tool for the job, you send something like a Coyote interceptor or Roadrunner-M to go out and kill it directly.
No barrage, no hoping—just track it, pick it, end it!

My knowledge of Cold War era AFV's is extremely limited so it should be of no surprise that I'd never heard of the MBT-70.

However, we have the Chieftain back to tell us all we need to know.

This is just part One that, as usual he just reviews the exterior. I think the tank is beautiful. However, as things go along he

explains how it was not well received.

I really am looking forward to have him get inside because the driver is also in the turret! WTF? Let's say the turret rotates

130 degrees to one side. Even if the driver can still see due to the multiple glass viewports how in the world can he steer?

I want to know.

Also trying to figure out in my head how this driver in the rotating turret thing is supposed to work.

One of the most horrible features of war is that all the war-propaganda, all the screaming and lies and hatred, comes invariably from people who are not fighting.

Finally the Chieftain provides part 2. Actually, it's a bit boring, but the mystery of the driver's position is explained briefly.

A little embarrassed to admit that until I saw this video I had never heard of the USN Virginia class of submarines.  I mean how

is that possible? There are currently 26 of them on active duty!! Really? Well, at least I know now. Listen closely to the sub description.

'MURICA baby!

@mtk Dude, they replaced the LOS ANGELES CLASS!  C'mon Terry, you don't want to rely on Nort to keep you up-to-date on USn hardware.  There is a decent channel on YT called Subbrief...

Then: The Sherman DD (“Duplex Drive”) on D-Day—a regular Sherman modified to swim ashore. A canvas flotation screen kept it afloat; the engine powered propellers in the water and tracks once it reached land.

The idea was simple: get armor onto the beach fast enough to support the infantry before the Germans could pin everyone down.

Now: The U.S. Marine Corps’ Amphibious Combat Vehicle (ACV)—an eight-wheeled armored vehicle built to move Marines from ship to shore, then keep going inland.

More protection, modern communications, better mobility—and a whole lot more attention to keeping the people inside alive.

Different era. Same ugly problem:

How do you get armored troops through the surf and onto a defended beach? 🪖
