Time to revisit and refight part of the Reconquista covering the period of Christian offensives leading up to and including the intervention by the Almoravid Berbers from North Africa.

It's essentially a 2 vs 2 player design, hopefully easy- and fast-playing and a bit cut-throat 😉  -- so far I've got myself, @chiquichops , @vuk-teble and @otosan on board -- maybe @cargol as a reserve player? (we are busy with our own 1v1 campaign)

@otosan has expressed interest in playing Christian side, I'm keen to have another go for the Muslim... @chiquichops and @vuk-teble I will assign by random draw?

RULES

Below the map of Spain divided into 22 regions.

Represented the two main Christian realms: Castile-Leon and Aragon (Navarre and Catalonia are incorporated for simplicity sake)

The Christian side can also activate the County of Portugal by capturing Oporto.

The Muslim side has a number of small Taifa Kingdoms or City States, established after the splintering of the Caliphate of Cordoba in the early 11th Century,

(Granada, Bajadoz, Toledo, Zaragoza, Tortosa, Valencia, Cordoba and Sevilla) who spent as much time in conflict with each other as fighting the infidels. (there were actually a lot more. 🙄 )

Reconquista sample

The campaign runs for 12 turns.

Each turn there are TWO Initiative Points (IP) available --

These allow the launching of attacks, one per IP.

Initiative Points are earned by Battle Victories, both in attack and defence.

The Christian side always goes FIRST, until the Almoravids are activated and enter combat, then the Muslim side always goes first.

Starting Setup

The Christian side has the initiative at the start and begin with TWO IP's each guaranteed for Turns 1 & 2, regardless of battle results.

The Christian side have ONE IP guaranteed up to the point when the Almoravids are activated and enter combat, then both IP's are up for grabs.

The Muslim side can only have ONE IP and launch a maximum of ONE attack per turn -- once the Almoravids are activated, they can launch TWO attacks per turn if they have the IP's available.

Almoravids

The Almoravids become activated as soon as the Christian side captures any one of the four yellow-labelled regions (Sevilla, Bajadoz, Toledo or Murcia) or at the start of TURN 8 (whichever comes first) (they were historically invited in to help by the Emir of Toledo...and then took over the whole place)

The Almoravids enter by taking control of Algeciras and the proceeding to expand their control over the Muslim Taifa regions at the rate of TWO per turn. This phase happens before any attack declarations are made.

The Almoravids can also then launch attacks from regions under their control against adjacent Christian controlled regions, if the IP's are available.

Portugal

Once the Christian side captures Oporto, the County of Portugal becomes active and the Portuguese armies become active. (the blue-labelled regions made up the historical extent of the later Kingdom of Portugal.

If Oporto or all Portuguese possessions are recaptured by the Muslim side, the Portugal faction is eliminated from the campaign.

ATTACKS

Each faction gets ONE attack per IP.

CHRISTIANS go first in declaring attacks until Almoravids are activated, then the Muslim side goes first.

A faction can attack an enemy province that is adjacent to a friendly-controlled province.

You may not attack from a province that is already under attack.

You may attack into a province from which an attack into a different province has been launched.

BATTLE RESTRICTIONS

Each Christian Kingdom (Castile/Leon, Aragon & Portugal) or Muslim Taifa can only launch ONE attack per turn.

Exception: Almoravids can attack TWO attacks per turn if the map situation and the IP's allow for it.

Taifas

Once the Almoravids have been activated, any Muslim attack launched from a still independent Taifa region, will use army: Andalusians (with Berber (Murabit) allies). If a Taifa is under Almoravids control, all attacks from it will be Berber (Murabit).

Granada

GRANADA is the final Muslim stronghold and can only be attacked by the Christians if all THREE adjacent provinces are under friendly control.

BATTLES

All FOG: Medieval battles are Medium Open Battles on Mediterranean Agricultural or Pot Luck maps. (players can decide)

Any winning percentage difference in casualties inflicted wins the battle or captures the province if attacking.

The winner of a battle is awarded the IP.

Draws: In the unlikely event that a battle ends with identical loss percentages, the battle continues in the next turn and the IP is forfeit for that turn.

Major Attacker Defeat:

If an Attacker suffers a Major Defeat (see definition below) the province from which the attack was launched is marked as Disrupted -- no attack can be launched from there for the next turn.

If the Disrupted Province is attacked in the next turn, it defends with a AUTOPICK army in the FOG: Medieval battle.

Definition: A Major Victory is when you win by routing the enemy with between 40% to 59% casualties and a minimum +25% margin.

ARMIES

The armies for the factions are:

TAIFAS:

Andalusian (1050-1154)

Allies: any Christian allies only available up until Almoravid activation (no Berbers). After then Almoravid activation, only Berber (Murabit) (1087-1147) allies.

ALMORAVIDS:

Berber (Murabit) (1087-1147)

Allies: Andalusian (1050-1154)

ARAGON:

Aragonese (1050-1136)

Catalan (1050-1136)

Allies: any available

CASTILLE/LEON:

Castilian/Leonese (1050-1154)

Allies: any available

PORTUGAL

Portuguese (1050-1136)

Allies: any available

VICTORY CONDITIONS

At the end of Turn 12:

CHRISTIAN

Total Victory: capture ALL of the Taifa regions while losing no Christian ones

Major Victory: capture Sevilla, Bajadoz, Toledo, Murcia and Granada

Minor Victory: capture Sevilla, Bajadoz, Toledo, Murcia

Marginal Victory: control more Taifa regions than the Muslim faction

MUSLIM

Total Victory: capture ALL of the Christian regions while losing no Muslim ones

Major Victory: re-establish all the Taifa regions as per start of the campaign

Minor Victory: control Sevilla, Bajadoz, Toledo, Murcia and Granada

Marginal Victory: prevent Christian faction from controlling all of Sevilla, Bajadoz, Toledo, Murcia while holding on to Granada

@vuk-teble @otosan @chiquichops @cargol   -- hope this makes sense -- shoot over any questions if you have them.

I've done a draw for the sides:

CHRISTIAN: @otosan @vuk-teble

MUSLIM: @Rico @chiquichops

Reserve: @cargol

Everyone okay with that?

That's great for me, I really fancied teaming up with @rico after fighting against each other so much.

TURN 1

Okay, we are ready to roll.

@vuk-teble , @otosan  -- where do you guys want to attack?

Declare your attack and also let us know if you are using any Allies and if you have preference as to Mediterranean Agricultural or Pot Luck maps.

@chiquichops and myself will pick up the battles and set them up as defenders.

Vuk attacks Tarragona with Catalan (1050-1136).

(Not just because there's already a yellow arrow there in the initial map...)

Oops, just see I messed up something in the rules.

Andalusians not supposed to get Berber allies until the Almoravids activated.

But I guess we can play it that way as well.

@rico I nearly asked. I think we should include your rule and keep the Berbers out of it till later. I'll set up again with Arogonese allies or something similar.

First strike for the Reconquista ... TARRAGONA falls to @vuk-teble 's Aragonese, and the Taifa of Tortosa is no more.

After a disastrous start for the Adalusians, I did manage to come back and make a fight of it, but in the end could never really make up the deficit and it ended 66 - 47 = +19% in favour of the Aragonese.

How goes the battle for OPORTO?

@otosan After our stalemate in the other campaign I decided on a new strategy, "there is only one stage: the melee stage". It seems to have been effective, though also a bit high risk. Rico caught a really unlucky couple rolls in his center right off the bat, but I never managed to fully capitalize on it, instead I had to wear him down. It was a fun match. Thanks Rico!

Good strategy.  I've have to get across that "beaten" zone covered by his massed archers first.😉

Yeah, at the start my guys decided to skip the "disrupt" part and go straight to "fragment".  It was painful to watch. 😥
